The secrets to a timeless bathroom

The bathroom — our last stop before bed and our first destination when we wake up. Our bathrooms are our personal retreats from the rest of the world.

This is a compelling reason to make your bathroom a soothing place to spend your time. Consider choosing timeless and classical fixtures and finishes to ensure your project will remain beautiful, relevant, (and comfortable) for years to come.

Clean lines create fresh feeling

In rooms with heavy use, clutter can easily build up and create a confused aesthetic. Complex accent pieces can be trendy, but they will eventually fall out of style and end up gathering dust — literally.

Straight, clean lines create visual simplicity, so think square or rectangular bath tiles with gray grout, which will stand up to years of wear and tear. Streamline your hardware with sleek handles and simple bathroom faucets and find ways to include classic curves in all the right places.

Traditional shapes stand the test of time

Timeless doesn’t mean boring, and certain visually interesting vintage accents will never go out of style — for good reason. Keep it old school with claw-foot bathtubs or a pedestal sink, and mix in modern touches like an ever-stylish round mirror with lights.

You can give your traditional bathroom fixtures an updated look without sacrificing convenience. Modern medicine cabinets combine both time-honored materials and designs with updated innovations, like in-drawer outlets and lighting. And you can’t forget to keep the most used seat in your house — the toilet — outfitted with water-saving tanks and concealed trapways, washlet features and appealing silhouettes.

Stay natural when choosing a finish

Colors, materials, and finishes can make or break the look and feel of a space. Bright shades and busy patterns can be fun, but become outdated quickly. For an easy facelift, leave the bathroom tile off of one or two walls so you can use paint as a way to add a splash of color with little hassle.

When it comes to bathroom hardware, color and finish transform the mood of a bathroom. Finishes like brushed nickel, matte black, and shiny chrome never go out of style and can be used for both knobs and handles, as well as fixtures like faucets and showerheads. For bathroom countertops, a natural stone such as marble will create both a durable and luxurious bathroom vanity.
